Athlete's foot: symptoms and remedies

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, especially the toes and soles. The infection is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which thrive in warm and moist environments such as sweaty shoes and socks. The symptoms of athlete’s foot can vary from person to person, but some common signs include:

• Itching, stinging, or burning sensation on the feet

• Peeling, cracking, or scaling skin on the soles or sides of the feet

• Blisters, which can break and cause painful sores

• Dry skin on the soles or sides of the feet

• Thickened, discolored, or deformed toenails

Athlete’s foot can spread easily through contact with an infected person or by walking barefoot on contaminated surfaces such as carpets and shower floors. It is important to keep your feet clean and dry, and to wear shoes in public places like hotels, gyms, and swimming pools.

To prevent the spread of athlete’s foot, it is important to treat not only your feet, but also your shoes. Shoes can harbor the fungus for a long time, so it is recommended to disinfect them regularly. You can use an antifungal spray or powder to kill the fungus and reduce the risk of reinfection.

The infection may be easily treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications, but in some cases, prescription-strength medication may be needed. In this case, a podiatrist can provide proper diagnosis and treatment.
